Significant Events in the Life of Our Pastor
Billy was saved at the age of 10 in March, 1964 during a month long revival conducted by Bishop Rufus Nunnery. At the conclusion of that revival he, his parents and two sisters joined the Church of God of Prophecy (COGOP) at Garland, N.C.
He felt from an early age that God was calling him in the ministry. He became a Sunday School teacher, conducted VBS and became Sunday School Superintendent while still a teenager.
He began dating the love of his life during his senior year of high school. On April 20, 1973 he and Barbara Ann Barnes became man and wife in a marriage ceremony officiated by Bishop Nunnery. That same year during the evangelism program at the General Assembly he again felt God’s call on his life and accepted that call shortly after.
During the state convention of 1976 he accepted the appointment as pastor of the Canton, COGOP. At age 27 he was ordained a Bishop in the COGOP at the General Assembly. After seven years at Canton he was appointed as pastor of the Selma COGOP. While there a special blessing of the Lord was given to him and Barbara: a beautiful 7 lb. 15 oz. little girl they called Bethany born June 6, 1986.
After Selma he served the congregations of Sawmills, Raeford, Stedman and Rocky Mount. Then in January of 2006 he became the Pastor of the Winston-Salem COGOP.
Our Pastor’s Education
Billy has always had a desire to learn more about the things of God. He was a graduate of Bible Training Institute before he ever accepted a position of pastor at age 22. He also attended the first year that the post graduate year of BTI was added.
While working full-time he also carried a full load of courses at Heritage Bible College in 1975-76. In 1976 he accepted the pastorate at Canton, NC so attending at Heritage was no longer feasible. In the ensuing years he took various courses and Tomlinson College extension classes.
In 1996 he continued his formal training at Christian Life School of Theology. He was awarded the Bachelor of Theology degree February 1, 1998. He received the Master of Theology degree on January 31, 1999; the Master of Divinity degree on January 30, 2000 and the Doctor of Ministry degree, January 23, 2001. He received summa cum laude honors (highest honors) with each degree
